2-day hiking holiday - Himmelbjerg and Hjejlen
Vejlsøvej 9, 8600 Silkeborg
Danish
This tour is for those who want to explore Silkeborg's scenic landscapes, historic lakes and enjoy pleasant overnight stays. With day trips of 15-25 km (you decide) you will have ample opportunity to immerse yourself in the many beauties of nature along the way. There is an hour boat trip on the Silkeborg Islands included and an overnight stay at Denmark's most beautiful campsite in a real bed.
Day 1: Glillerne, Vesterskoven and Slåensø
The tour starts from Freshwater Centre/Vejlsøhus, and then the tour goes through the beautiful lakes of the Gudenå system and the breathtaking forests of Silkeborg. Here is a little bit about what you will experience.
The tour starts along Gudenåen and leads you to Avnsø, a small lake almost hidden in Østerskov. The shape of the lake as a pair of glasses has given it the name “Holger Danske's glasses”. On the way you will pass a small wooden bridge and a cozy fire pit with tables and benches — perfect for a short break.
After this, the tour continues along the Gudenå system to Slåensø, Denmark's cleanest lake, filled only with rain and spring water. The lake is bordered by wooded hills with beech and majestic Douglas-firs. A 3.5 km long path goes around the lake and leads you past the viewpoint Kongestolen and close to Denmark's tallest tree. Enjoy the packed lunch here as you take in the beautiful scenery.
Throughout the tour there are beautiful picnic spots with tables and benches.
At the end of the day you will arrive at Skyttehuset's Outdoor Camp, where dinner will be enjoyed in the café. A room has been booked here at Gudenåen (there is a shower and toilet right outside the door), so you just have to enjoy a hopefully nice summer evening. The campsite is beautifully located by Gudenåen, and hopefully you can enjoy an evening with a view of Hjejlen sailing just past.
Day 2: Sky Mountain, Boat Trip and City Nature
After breakfast, you leave Skyttehuset's Outdoor Camp and head towards Himmelberget. The tour goes through the scenic landscape along Gudenåen and into the forest areas. The last part of the route offers a climb of 200 meters, but the view from the top of Himmelberget is worth it. Once you have enjoyed the amazing views and the area around Himmelbjerg, the trip goes down to Julsø, where you sail for an hour to the port of Silkeborg.
From Silkeborg Havn, the tour continues along Langsjön, through Odden and Lysbro Skov, on around Ørnsø to Silkeborg Bad, formerly a health resort at Arnakkekilden, but which now serves as an art hall under the name KunstCentrum Silkeborg Bad. Explore the Sculpture Park, which houses over 50 sculptures — both permanent and temporary. Take some time to enjoy the art, and maybe visit the art center, where you can experience the exhibition “In the light of repetition” by Peter Brandes throughout the summer.
Continue through the forest and discover the history of World War II at Silkeborg Bunkermuseum. Here you can see bunkers and trenches, and exhibits with photos, weapons and documents from the period when the Germans had their military headquarters here.
In the middle of the route you will find the troll Strong Storm, a large wooden sculpture created by Thomas Dambo. He is one of the many hidden troll sculptures around Denmark, each with its own unique story.
Make a stop at Østre Søbad, where you can buy coffee, ice cream or take a refreshing dip. The route then takes you through Kobskov and back to Freshwater Center.
If the legs still have energy, the trip can continue to Inslukken, a favorite excursion destination for the silk borers. Here you will find a motorboat harbour, restaurant, ice house and the possibility of a game of mini golf. Alternatively, you can finish the tour after 10 km when you pass the Freshwater Center.
This day combines scenic climbs, relaxing boating, and pleasant breaks, providing a memorable end to Silkeborg Camino's adventurous hike.
